Spiderman is one of the oldest and the most beloved Stan Lee character ever made. When spiderman (Tom Holland) was introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fans were both shocked and excited at the same time. Spiderman has been a part of the MCU for the last five years. Recently, spidy fans got shocking news that he will not be a part of the marvel cinematic universe anymore.
The 2015 Sony-Disney Deal:
Seven months after the release of The Amazing Spiderman 2, there were controversies and rumors that a deal between Sony and Marvel was going to take place and Spiderman would be a part of the MCU and thanks to the massive email hack that hit the studio around that time. Then in Captain America Civil War, Tom Holland made his debut as a 14-year-old kid with Uncle Ben already dead. (See what i did there Sony?) aka Peter Parker or Spiderman.
That was one of the most exciting and the best moment for spidy and marvel fans because the friendship between Tony Stark and Peter Parker has been seen in several comic books and animated shows.
The contract was for five movies, the events of which took place between 2016 and 2023 in the MCU, i.e. Captain America Civil War to Spiderman Far From Home.
Spiderman far from home is the first movie of the spiderman franchise which has crossed the One Billion Dollar mark.
What happened to the deal in 2019?:
After the contract was over and Sony and Disney decided to renegotiate the terms of the deal. Disney asked for a 50/50 co-financing between both the studios and there were discussions that it might extend to other spiderman movies. Sony decided to turn down that offer and hence Disney and Sony decided that Spiderman will not be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe anymore.
But that’s not it. After listening to this news, fans became furious over social media and decided to boycott Sony. However, Disney was to blame for this disagreement.
Even Jeremy Renner(Hawkeye) also posted on Instagram about the issue and the fans backed him up.
Does Marvel deserve Spiderman?:
Spiderman is one of the most beloved Stan Lee characters and after the rights were sold to sony, marvel tried a lot to get it from them until 2015. But did they really deserve this beloved Stan Lee character?
When Stan’s daughter Joan Lee was asked to give a statement on this issue, she sided with Sony and said: “When my father died, no one from Marvel or Disney reached out to me,” Lee said. “From day one, they have commoditized my father’s work and never shown him or his legacy any respect or decency. In the end, no one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney’s executives.”
Will Spiderman come back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?:
Spiderman is not yet back in the MCU, but there is news that there will be another re-negotiation between the top-level management of both the companies and it might lead Tom Holland’s spiderman to come back in the MCU. Not just that, But Holland also posted about this on Instagram and told the fans that there’s still hope as he discussing the script for Spiderman 3 with the writers. So let’s not lose hope.
A marvel fan also created a website to tell if Spiderman is back in the MCU or not. Check it out:
